Police Officer Hiring Process
Step 1. Application Submission

Step 2. Screening and Interviews
Applications will be accepted and screened on an ongoing basis until our open positions are filled. Strong candidates will be scheduled for an in-person interview and possibly an Administrative Interview with the Chief of Police and/or Lieutenant.
The top candidiate(s) will be selected and move on to step 3.
Step 3. Conditional Offer of Employment
Selected candidates will be sent a Conditional Offer of Employment letter to be signed by the candidate.
Step 5. Background Investigation
Selected candidates will undergo a comprehensive background investigation that includes an examination of personal, criminal, and employment histories, along with reference and financial checks.
The candidate will receive an email with instructions to login to the Guardian background investigation program. Several types of documents will need to be uploaded and an online personal history questionnaire (PHQ) will need to be completed.
Once documents have been uploaded, and the PHQ is complete, a background investigator will be assigned to complete the background investigation.

Step 6. Medical Evaluations and Psychological Assessment
Upon successful completion of a background investigation, candidates will be required to undergo a medical evaluation and psychological assessment to ensure they are physically and mentally fit to perform the duties of a police officer.
Step 7. Official Offer of Employment
Upon successful completion of the background process, medical evaluation, and psycological assessment, the candidate will receive an official offer of employment to become a Black Butte Ranch Police Officer.
Step 8. DPSST Training
Based on the candidate's previous level of law enforcement training and experience, the newly hired officer will have to follow one of the following paths:
- Attend full DPSST police academy - Officers who are new to law enforcement, or previous experience was not accepted by the Oregon DPSST
- Partial attendance at DPSST police academy - Officers who have been retired and may need to take refresher classes, or a lateral officer whose out of state training was not fully accepted by the Oregon DPSST. This training may be either in-person at the academy or online
- No additional DPSST training required - Officers pervious training was fully accepted by the Oregon DPSST and they meet all of Oregon's requirements
Step 9. Field Training and Evaluation Process (FTEP)
Once selected, all new officer(s) to the Black Butte Ranch Police Department will be scheduled for orientation and field training. Exact length of training will be determined by relevant previous experience, familiarity with law enforcement processes and procedures in Central Oregon, and the status of their DPSST certification among other factors.
