Hiring On-Call Officers
The Black Butte Ranch Police Department is seeking to establish a small group of Oregon DPSST Certified officers who are interested in maintaining their DPSST certifications, but who may no longer be interested in the rigors of a full-time law enforcement career.
These on-call police officers will be utilized to supplement our current staffing levels and assist in filling open patrol shifts. These open shifts would most often be the result of a full-time officer using their PTO time or when the Department determines it needs additional officers on duty.
Our ideal candidate is a recently retired police officer from Central Oregon who either still has a valid DPSST Certification or has a lapsed certification that is eligible to be reactivated. Individuals who recently retired from other agencies in Oregon are also strongly encouraged to apply.
About Black Butte Ranch Police Department
The Black Butte Ranch Police Department (BBRPD) is an Oregon-accredited agency and one of two police special service districts in the state. The department is comprised of the Chief of Police, one Lieutenant, four patrol officers, and the Administrative Manager. This is a fantastic opportunity for the right candidate to join our small, community-oriented department where the employees are encouraged to interact with and get to know the people and culture of a unique resort community.
Black Butte Ranch is a resort community nestled on the eastern slopes of the Cascade mountains along Highway 20. The Ranch is comprised of 1251 home sites and Ranch-owned buildings spread across 8.2 square miles. With just over 200 full-time residents calling the Ranch home, the vast majority of homes are vacations homes or vacation rentals. During the peak tourism months our population can swell to several thousand visitors. Weekends and vacation periods are critical operational periods for staffing of the Police Department.
On the Ranch the department patrols 33 miles of private roads plus 18 miles of bike paths where it enforces state and federal law, as well as the Ranch Rules and Regulations. In the summer, our officers log many miles on bike patrol, enjoying the mountain views and sunshine. Officers will additionally patrol out on Highway 20 in front of Black Butte Ranch. The department has an excellent working relationship with the surrounding agencies and BBRPD officers are often called upon to assist the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office, Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, and Oregon State Police in matters affecting Black Butte Ranch and the surrounding communities.
