Police Officer - Primary Job Duties

This document is intended as a general guide to some of the primary job duties and tasks a Black Butte Ranch Police Officer may be asked to perform. It is by no means an exhaustive list of all job duties or responsibilities that may be assigned to this position now or in the future. 109.2 DEFINITIONS Mental Fitness - Refers to . It encompasses various aspects, including: • Emotional regulation: Managing emotions effectively, such as stress, anxiety, anger, frustration, and depression • Cognitive function: Sharpness, memory, and problem-solving abilities • Social well-being: Building and maintaining healthy relationships with co-workers and members of the public • Self-awareness: Understanding one's own thoughts, feelings, communications, and behaviors 109.3 GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES Performs peace officer functions of law enforcement and crime prevention work including patrol and investigation. Controls traffic, and enforces state and local traffic regulations, and other ordinances and laws. Respond to calls, including traffic accidents, major and minor crimes, civil complaints, and perform CPR/First Aid as necessary. Works directly with citizens in the areas of criminal and civil law enforcement. Regularly engages with Black Butte Ranch community members. Performs related work as required including planning and research. Incumbents in this position may be required to work rotating shifts, including weekend and holiday assignments. Employees may be subject to being called back to work on short notice for reasons that include, but aren't limited to: to respond to emergencies, to fill open duty shifts. 109.4 SUPERVISION RECEIVED Officers may be supervised by a sergeant, lieutenant and the Chief of Police based upon the current structure of the department. 109.5 SUPERVISION EXERCISED Black Butte Ranch Police Department Law Enforcement Services Manual Police Officer - Primary Job Duties Copyright Lexipol, LLC 2026/04/27, All Rights Reserved. However, assignments may include field training officer responsibility, supervision of community service officers or volunteers, and Officer in Charge (OIC) or senior officer in the absence of a superior officer. 109.6 ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS An employee in this classification may perform any of the following duties. However, these examples do not include all the specific tasks which an employee may be expected to perform. Officers may also be assigned to areas of special emphasis such as investigations, DUII and accident reduction, crime prevention, community service programs, and special tactics. 1. Patrols roads, residential and business areas that are important for the protection of the District. Enforces traffic and criminal laws and issues citations or warnings to violators. Conduct building security checks and checks for suspicious persons and vehicles. 2. Responds to a wide variety of radio calls including thefts, juvenile complaints, burglaries, sexual assaults, family disputes, barking dogs, loud parties, etc., and take appropriate action. Performs investigations at accident and crime scenes and directs traffic if necessary. 3. Performs life saving measures and treats serious physical injuries as needed utilizing CPR and First Aid techniques. 4. Exhibit sufficient mental acuity and sound reasoning abilities necessary to quickly review, analyze, understand, evaluate, and interpret department policies, procedures, rules, and regulations during calls for service and other work-related events. Ability to work independently and make sound decisions that accurately reflect the goals and objectives of the Department. 5. Assists the public by answering inquiries regarding directions, laws, ordinances, and Ranch Rules; aids stranded motorists; conducts vacation house checks; checks road conditions, street signs, and areas of access control and reports defects; gives other assistance to the public as needed. 6. Maintains effective working relationship with law enforcement agencies. Provides assistance and back-up as requested. Provide appropriate information to other law enforcement agencies, social service agencies, and citizens regarding on-going investigations, department policies, officer safety information, criminal activity, traffic accidents, etc. 7. Makes arrests and issues citations when required or appropriate. Handles and transports prisoners as called for by law. Prepares full and comprehensive reports on major and many minor activities within the officer's jurisdiction. 8. Investigates accidents and criminal complaints as assigned. Contacts victims, witnesses, and suspects and handles evidence to conduct interviews and interrogations. Reports all pertinent information to fellow officers and supervisors. 9. Maintain written records and prepare sufficiently detailed reports regarding investigations, which are reviewed by a supervisor and used for crime prevention, prosecution and office activities. Will work on the preparation of the court case in conjunction with superior officers and various attorneys. 10. Maintains in good standing all certifications, licenses, qualifications and other educational requirements as determined by law or policy. 11. Perform other projects, functions, and tasks, as assigned. Complete designated job tasks, special projects and all other duties as assigned to meet department goals. Show a willingness to assist fellow employees with additional needs as time and workload allows. 12. Maintain cooperative working relationships with Police Department staff, Black Butte Ranch Corporation staff, other organizations and the public. 13. Communicate in an appropriate professional, respectful, and courteous manner with all employees, customers, residents, guests, colleagues, members of the public, and others with whom we may work, often in stressful conditions. 14. Utilizes a variety of speech patterns and tones that are appropriate for various types of calls for service. This may include speaking loudly and forcefully, to speaking in a manner that is calm and relies on deescalation techniques. 15. Ability to routinely operate assigned vehicles, equipment, and tools skillfully, safely, and in conformance with applicable laws and regulations. 16. Actively demonstrate high levels of employee engagement, accountability, coachability, and responsibility for personal performance and results. 109.7 ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Physical strength, agility, and stamina sufficient to perform the work as a police officer and participate in department led or sponsored training for this position.. While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to sit, stand, communicate, reach and manipulate objects, tools or controls. The position requires mobility and the ability to operate a motorized vehicle, including a bicycle if assigned to ride bicycle during the summer months. Duties involve moving or wearing materials weighing up to 25 pounds on a regular basis; however, it may be required to move adults weighing more than 200 pounds on an infrequent basis. Equipment worn typically weighs more than 25 pounds. Manual dexterity and coordination are required over 50% of the work period while operating equipment such as computer keyboards, motorized vehicles, firearms, etc. Position may be required to deal with violent and combative individuals requiring considerable physical effort. Jogging, running, and sprinting may also be required during rapidly evolving situations and training scenarios. 109.8 MENTAL REQUIREMENTS Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing; ability to work independently and make sound decisions. Mental alertness is very important because of the need to make fine discriminations and decisions concerning subtle cues of impending danger or to discover inconsistencies in witnesses or situations changing dramatically within a few seconds, taxing the maximum of human endurance. Therefore, incumbents must remain physically and mentally fit to enable them to handle, with minimum force and backup. Officers are expected to make recurrent contacts and involvement with people, animals, and equipment that may be dangerous and potentially dangerous, hostile, or non-cooperative. Must be able to communicate and manage people with heightened or erratic emotions and behavior, function in an environment where emotions can become and remain elevated for longer periods of time Must be able to develop and maintain positive cooperative team-oriented relationships with coworkers, supervisors, managers, and others you come in contact with. 109.9 NECESSARY SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS • Possession of a valid Oregon driver's license. • Possession of a valid Basic, Intermediate, or Advanced Certificate from the Department of Public Safety Standards and Training. • Strong written and oral communication skills 109.10 WORK ENVIRONMENT The work environment/physical demands described here are representatives of those an employee may encounter while performing the essential functions of this job. Due to the nature of this line of work, all positions are expected to work in variable weather conditions, including but not limited to, rain, high winds, hot and cold temperatures, large amounts of snow, long periods of darkness, etc. Work locations are in all types of indoor and outdoor environments. Incumbent operates police vehicles and may be required to sit/stand for extended periods while performing various duties Contact with individuals who may become violent, combative, under the influence of drugs/alcohol, mentally ill or who have communicable diseases. Must be available for rotating shifts including weekend and holiday assignments.
